Obviously the natural world (and life) is not a series of deterministic billiard ball reactions. what is it?

Please only scientific answers. I'm trying to understand why free will exists in a natural universe of what should be predictible, deterministic biochemical and mechanical reactions
Let me be more clear: Suppose I could precisely define the position and velocity of every atom in the universe. Could I predict the future? I suspect the answer is "no" but I can't prove it

The answer is no, you could not predict the future on such a limited basis. Returning to your original question, what you refer to as "free will" is only one of a million+ variables. Some reactions are predictable (water will freeze into ice at 32 degrees F), but who can truly predict the vast fluctuations in weather - or (if indoors) the reliability of the freezer to continue functioning without mechanical failure OR unforeseen intervention if someone suddenly changes the temperature settings. (As my husband typically does when I'm attempting to thaw out a roast or something....)

Please excuse the simplistic analogy, but it makes the point.
If you knew every atom's position, (starting point) you would still have no way of knowing where they would end up, since a fixed velocity would be only one tiny aspect of the journey.......

Ironically, where 'free will' is concerned, you are asking for a scientific answer to something that has crossed over into the realm of the soul, based on certain spiritual truths. Science will not and cannot acknowledge such intangibles...(although it manages to create quite a few intangibles of its own every day). When you are willing to consider a science that includes all facets of life - spirit, soul and body - functioning within the boundaries of the basic spiritual and physical laws set down by its Creator....then you will be on your way to true understanding, and you'll find the answers, because you will know the questions!
